The Dev’s added to their recent winning streak by defeating the New York Islanders 3-1 Tuesday night. Their triumph over the Isles came with bittersweet news that Center Jacob Josefson will miss up to six weeks with a fractured left wrist.
Josefson missed 36 games earlier in the year with a clavicle injury. Goalie Johan Hedberg, who stopped 19 shots in the victory Tuesday night, spoke on behalf of the injury to Josefson.
“I feel terrible for him,” Hedberg said. “He works so hard and deserves all the good things. He’s obviously going to be strong mentally when he gets through all this. Hopefully he can keep his head up. It’s not fair.”
The official injury report claims he could miss anywhere from four to six weeks, and The Devils are hoping to take their momentum long enough into the playoffs to welcome back his return.
Meanwhile, The Devils received their most recent victory on the heels of Patrik Elias and Travis Zajac who knocked in each of their goals, respectively, in the first and second periods. Elias continued his handling of the New York Islanders by picking up his 78th point in 77 career games with an assist to go with his 26th goal of the season. Zajac continued a smooth return from his own early-season injury by scoring his second goal on a power play assist from Captain Zach Parise. Ilya Kovulchuk added his 35th goal on an empty net towards the end of the third period.
The Devils are away in Detroit tonight in the second-to-last game before the playoffs begin next week. The Devils are hoping to catch the fifth-place Philadelphia Flyers who remain three points ahead in the Eastern Conference. Tonight’s game time face-off begins at 7:30 ET.
