The 1994 season was both one of the best and worst for the New Jersey Devils. It was the best, because the arrival of Jacques Lemaire and Martin Brodeur would bring unprecedented success to the franchise. In addition, it was the worst, because the Devils had lost to the hated Rangers.
Unfortunately, the Devils would lose to the Rangers in an all time classic playoff series in OT after 7 games. If all of this wasn’t enough, Mark Messier had delivered on “The Guarantee” that he had made before game 6. The Devils have won 3 Stanley Cups since the loss, but the franchise still had some unfinished business with the Rangers.
As fate would have it, the Devils once again would take a 2-0 lead into game #6 of this year’s series. Just like in 1994, the Rangers would claw their way back into the game. Thankfully, the Devils found a way to score in OT on a “gimme” goal by Adam Henrique. After the miraculous goal by Henrique, the crowd began chanting something not heard since 2003, “We want the cup!” The Stanley Cup finals start on Wednesday.
