New Jersey Devils prospect Reid Boucher is approaching the record of 58 goals in a single season. Tampa Bay Lightning superstar Steven Stamkos holds the existing record. The 19 year old tallied his 50th goal in impressive fashion on Friday during a power play, leading the Sting to a 2-1 victory over the Windsor Spitfires. Boucher then notched his 51st the next day against Oshawa in a 4-2 win.
The fourth-round draft pick, 99th overall, in 2011 for the New Jersey Devils has just 10 games left to put eight more pucks in the net. Boucher has scored 11 goals in the 10 games played so far in February.
Boucher has shocked many this year as he improved drastically since 2011-2012. Boucher posted 28 goals, 22 assists, and a -19 rating in 67 games with Sarnia last season. Aside from the 51 goals, Boucher has 26 assists and a +9 rating in 2012-2013.
Boucher continues his campaign for the record as Sarnia plays Sault Ste. Marie Thursday. Sault Ste. Marie embarrassed Sarnia in their last meeting on Wednesday, February 13th 8-0.
Expect to see Boucher break the record within the final 10 games. The current OHL record is 87 goals set by Ernie Godden in the 1980-81 season with Windsor. This record is well out of the reach of Boucher, but his season has been extremely impressive. The Devils look to have a star player in the making.
