Reid Boucher, a top prospect for the New Jersey Devils set a new Sarnia Sting goals record after registering a hat trick last night in the Sting’s 8-7 win over the Saginaw Spirit. Boucher shattered the record previously set by Steven Stamkos, an NHL superstar for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Boucher made this feat more likely as he had a monster week last week when he scored his 52nd and 53rd goals on Thursday, February 21, 2013 against Sault Ste. Marie. He then scored his 54th 55th 56th and 57th the next day in Sarnia’s 13-3 blowout win over the Erie Otters. Boucher only needed two more goals to set the new Sarnia team record.
Boucher already found himself in good company as many star players in the NHL have scored more than 50 goals in the OHL. These players include Ryan Callahan, Patrick Kane. Steven Stamkos, Jeff Skinner, and John Tavares,
Boucher is poised to be a great player for the Devils in the near future. Although Boucher was only selected 99th overall in the 2011 NHL draft, he has grown into a lethal scorer with major potential.
Boucher has just five games remaining on the season, but he already has accomplished many achievements this year. Since he is nowhere near the OHL single season goal record of 87, set by Ernie Godden in 1981, he now chases 100 points.
Boucher is only nine points away from 100 as he currently sits fifth on the OHL top scorers list for the 2012-2013 season. Boucher has 60 goals, 31 assists, and 53 penalty minutes in 63 games for Sarnia this season.
Boucher’s teammate, Charles Sarault, an undrafted player in the NHL currently sits first in scoring with 102 points. Sarault has 22 goals, 80 assists, and 28 penalty minutes in 63 games for Sarnia this year. The Devils should show some interest in Sarault as he has assisted many of Boucher’s goals this season.
Congratulations Reid Boucher!
