Newark, N.J. - The New Jersey Devils entered the rivalry night against the New York Rangers at the Prudential Center. The two teams last met earlier in the season, the Devils won 3-1. This meeting was a lot tighter.
However, the Rangers answered just over a minute after the Zajac goal. Carl Hagelin got a lucky bounce on a rebound from a shot by Dan Girardi. Hagelin just tapped it right past Johan Hedberg.
Then the ping-pong match continues as the Devils answered at 17:13 into the first on Anton Volchenkov’s first goal of the season. He only had one goal last year as well. The shot from the point went off of a ranger and right past Henrik Lundqvist.
Rick Nash scored the game-winning-goal at 7:25 in the second on a breakout play. Hedberg came out strong but gave up his five-hole, Nash shot it right through. The five-hole has been the weak spot for Hedberg this season.
The Devils had an ample amount of chances, but nothing could get through the Rangers net minder.
The Devils had many chances in the third period. Opportunities from Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias, but they could not finish the play. The Devils had a flourish of chances in the final two minutes when the Devils pulled Hedberg. The puck was pinned against the post, however, Lundqvist fended off the shots.
Marek Zidlicky played his 600th career game tonight, Henrique played in his 100th career game.
Martin Brodeur was on the bench as the back-up goaltender. He could start Thursday’s game in Carolina, but it is very unlikely.
The Devils take the ice again in Carolina. The Devils lost the last two games against the Canes, 4-2 and 5-1.
The Devils also fell out of the top eight after this loss. They need to bounce back on Thursday and play New Jersey Devils hockey.
