Today in NHL History- March 29

Here’s another look at some NHL history. Maybe it’ll help you in a trivia contest some day.

March 29

1929- On this day, United States hockey history was made. The first NHL Stanley Cup between two United States teams took place. The Boston Bruins defeated the New York Rangers and took home their first Stanley Cup title. Even 54 years before the team moved to New Jersey in 1982, hockey fans in New Jersey cheered for their rival’s defeat!

1999- Wayne Gretzky scored professional goal #1,072* while playing for the New York Rangers. This goal put Gretzky ahead of legend Gordie Howe who scored 1,071* goals. Praise the Great! Wow- 1,072 and that wasn’t it. (*These stats include postseason games)

2004 -  It should be a good day in Winnipeg. 9 years ago today, the NHL allowed the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers from Time Warner. This began the series of events that led to the Thrashers relocation to Winnipeg. Now, the Winnipeg Jets are settled in and poised to make the playoffs for the first time under their new name.
