Below are my three stars of tonight’s contest between the New Jersey Devils and the Florida Panthers. The Panthers won 3-2 in overtime after tying the game at two with 28 seconds remaining in regulation at the BB&T Center.
Three Stars of the Game
First Star: Shawn Matthias
Matthias registered two goals on the evening for the Panthers and lit the lamp for the 13th and 14th time this season. His first goal on the power play tied the game at one in the first period. Matthias then found a loose puck in front of a wide open net to tie the game at two with 28 seconds left in regulation.
Second Star: Dmitry Kulikov
Kulikov scored the game winner for the Panthers 1:43 into the overtime period. This was the first goal of the season for the 22 year old Russian and eighth point. The Panthers stunned the Devils with this goal.
Third Star: Steve Bernier
Bernier accounted for all of New Jersey’s goal scoring tonight. After scoring his 7th goal of the season early in the first period, he added his eighth in the third period on the power play to give the Devils a 2-1 lead. #18 has been solid for the Devils all year and surely wanted two points tonight.
The following two players are also worth a mention to Devils fans.
Both Jon Merrill and Reid Boucher, who recently signed with the Albany Devils, played well tonight.
In his first game with Albany, Boucher netted a goal and collected two assists. Merrill also added two assists after registering one assist in his Albany debut on Friday.
Albany fell to Portland 5-4 in a shootout.
