The NHL announced today that the New Jersey Devils will play an outdoor game in 2014 against the New York Rangers. The game will take place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The Devils will be the home team in the game, despite being out of state.

The game will take place on Jan. 26, 2014. Then three days later, the Rangers play the New York Islanders in the same venue.

Fans have wanted a Hudson River Rivalry game played outdoors for years, they got their wish; however, MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands would be a better venue.

The NHL approved of four other outdoor games all around the league. These games attract very large crowds, interest, and revenue.

The Winter Classic, is going to be on New Years Day between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game was originally planned for this year, but the lockout ended that. The Red Wings will host the Leafs at Michigan Stadium or “The Big House”, in front of a crowd of over 100,000.

The other games include Los Angeles Kings vs. Anaheim Ducks at Dodger Stadium, Vancouver Canucks vs. Ottawa Senators at BC Place, and Chicago Blackhawks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins at Soldier Field.

Outdoor games are great for the fans and the NHL, especially a huge rivalry matchup between the Devils and Rangers. The Devils are also going to play a pre-season game against the Islanders in the brand new Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
