After the announcement of Ilya Kovalchuk retiring with 12 years and $77 million remaining on his contract, Devils fans instantly resented the Russian forward. This has brought me to wonder, who is the most hated player by Devils fans?
Kovalchuk quitting on the Devils left fans with an awful taste in their mouths, as well as a sick feeling in their stomachs; however, this was seen from a mile away after Kovalchuk’s bad attitude about coming back to the NHL after the lockout ended.
But is this worse than Zach Parise? Our team captain leaving the team following a trip to the Stanley Cup Final, to go back home to Minnesota. Both players wanted to be back home, but at least Parise was a free agent and did not have to quit the Devils and leave at the start of a 15-year commitment.
Next, the despised Sean Avery. The creator of the “Sean Avery Rule” for being an annoyance, screening Martin Brodeur by facing him and waving his stick in Brodeur’s face. Avery has always been disliked by the Devils and their fans and the bad blood continues down to Brodeur, who did not shake hands with Avery after the Rangers eliminated the Devils from the 2008 playoffs. Avery also is accused of diving and crying to the officials on the ice.
Lastly, Scott Gomez left the Devils for their nemesis New York Rangers. Gomez was a great player in New Jersey, a fan favorite, and two time Stanley Cup Winner, but following the 2007 season Gomez signed a contract with the Rangers. Gomez is known as a “traitor” in most Devils fans’ minds, but Karma got him back, he has not played very well over the past few seasons.
