Devils Training Camp: Day 5

The first full scrimmage of the year took place at training camp today and it was a fair mix of veterans and rookies. As always, a huge thank you to Tom Gulitti for tweeting out what has been happening at camp.

  • Gulitti made a post on his blog, Fire and Ice, listing all of the players that were and were not in the scrimmage including line combinations. He also ended up updating the article with a recap of the game. I suggest reading it as I make some references to it. Read more into that here.
  • Jaromir Jagr did not dress today after the injury he suffered yesterday. The injury is being labeled as “a little lower body soreness.” Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said that there is “no timetable” on his return yet “but we’re not concerned.” (Tom Gulitti)

So here are the main things I took away from today’s scrimmage.

  • Martin Brodeur gave up 1 goal to Rostislav Olesz and Cory Schneider didn’t give up anything. Although it was only a scrimmage, I still believe that Schneider had a tougher team to play against than Brodeur did but that isn’t a knock on Marty.
  • I thought the Red Team had a slight advantage in defense on paper but the game was pretty even according to Gulitti.
  • Stefan Matteau added an empty netter to secure the win for the White Team , 2-0.
  • When it comes to forwards, I thought the teams were pretty even but probably an advantage would go to the Red Team because of their first line.
  • Red Team’s first line consisted of Ryane Clowe-Adam Henrique-Michael Ryder, the second time they have been paired together now. It is all but certain at this point that they will be together when the season starts as many people predicted this line during the offseason.
  • Everyone who didn’t participate in the scrimmage, excluding Jagr, participated in practice later in the day.

I follow both Tom Gulitti and Rich Chere and a lot of what both of them say are duplicates so I directly credit Gulitti sometimes but if you are looking for another Devils reporter to follow, follow Rich Chere.

  • I believe that Olesz will stay at LW but it is interesting and important to keep in the back of your mind that he can move around if need be. With all of the talent in Albany, they may want him to move around.

We are only 3 days away until the Devils play the New York Rangers to open up preseason!

Side note: I apologize ahead of time. I will not be able to post anything tomorrow on training camp, if there’s any camp at all tomorrow. It is hard to find their camp schedule because they usually keep a tight lid on this so personally, I will not be posting tomorrow. I should be back to post about anything I missed on Sunday including some sort of preview.
