NYI vs. NJD Preseason Preview

After the New Jersey Devils had a successful preseason opener against the New York Rangers, the Devils will stay at the Prudential Center to take on the New York Islanders.

Reid Boucher gets another start tonight. Clearly the Devils are intent on seeing what he can bring to the table this year as with Jacob Josefson. Ryane Clowe and Michael Ryder are together once again tonight. Ryan Carter and Stephen Gionta are together again also and it will be interesting to see if any notable chemistry could form from this pairing.

Bryce Salvador and Marek Zidlicky are paired together once again today. It will be interesting to see if this pairing materializes this year.

Scott Wedgewood will also be backing up Martin Brodeur tonight and likely playing 1 period.

Players to Watch

Martin Brodeur will be making his first start of the season and has announced that he will be playing two periods. At this point in his career, it is safe to say we know what we can expect from Brodeur. Still, many people question his effectiveness at 41 years old so look for a little taste on what he has left in the tank.

Once again I’m going to put Reid Boucher on my radar. He didn’t have a terrible game on Monday, but in the preseason you need to put up dazzling efforts to start on the NHL team and he hasn’t shown anything dazzling through the first game.

Line to Watch

Rostislav Olesz – Travis Zajac – Damien Brunner

It goes without saying that Damien Brunner should be on everyone’s radar for a whole plethora of reasons. He will be playing hard tonight so watch to see how he reacts to the opportunity of playing with the team.

Rostislav Olesz is playing with a man who might cause him to lose his roster spot on his very own line. Olesz put forth a fairly good performance on Monday against the New York Rangers, so look for him to play extra hard tonight with his competition playing alongside him.

Tonight will be Travis Zajac’s first preseason competition so look to see how the Devils’ probable starting center will do tonight with Brunner and Olesz at his side.

Final Prediction

New York Islanders 2, Devils 3

I am predicting goals from Olesz, Michael Ryder, and Damien Brunner.
