Special Teams Plays Atrocious As Devils Lose Fight With Islanders 5-3

The New Jersey Devils took the ice tonight against the New York Islanders tonight at the Prudential Center.

The Devils got down early when the Islanders scored a power play goal 3:31 into the first period. Just over three minutes later, Josh bailey first of a pair of shorthanded goals. Both shorthanded goals were caused by turnovers in the neutral zone and lack of hustle to get back on defense.

The Devils got a power play goal of their own after the first shorthanded goal, but the Isles kept coming. Former Devil Eric Boulton scored the fourth goal of the period after receiving a pass out of the penalty box, giving him a breakaway.

The Devils added two goals in the second period off shots from defensemen Marek Zidlicky and Jon Merrill. But they were not enough to beat the Islanders, who would later add an insurance goal in the third from Peter Regin on yet another breakaway.

The power play has a lot of work to do. The Devils had nine power play opportunities and converted once, not to mention gave up two short handed goals.

Penalty minutes were through the roof tonight after there were five fights and three game misconduct penalties. There were a total of 112 penalty minutes.

In other news Damien Brunner, Ryane Clowe, Jon Merrill, Michael Ryder, Damon Severson, and Scott Wedgewood all made their Devils debuts tonight. Clowe did not see much of the ice after exiting with a lower body injury after playing just 2:01 minutes. However, Brunner, Merrill, and Ryder all looked impressive tonight.

Eric Gelinas continued to prove himself worthy of a roster spot with two assists.
