The Devils have a big game ahead of them tonight. Despite it only being Game 2 of a long season, the home opener is always a big game. Martin Brodeur will make his first start of the season tonight and the Devils will hope that the strong forecheck they had the night before will continue and the defense can improve. The New York Islanders are another fast team like the Pittsburgh Penguins and it will be tough to keep up if the Devils D plays like it did last night.
Pete DeBoer has said that the same 18 players will dress tonight but not all of the line combos will stay the same. He didn’t go into specifics about what they would be and there isn’t anything set in stone as far as the media’s knowledge.
The New Jersey Devils will look to keep the offensive pressure going tonight and finish tonight. The Devils had decent chemistry and passing tonight but there is still more to be desired from them.
One big factor tonight will be the defense. The defense struggled a lot last night and my player to watch is surprisingly Marek Zidlicky. Now, hear me out. He had a pretty atrocious game last night and admitted that he should be more patient than he was with his errant “pass” last night. If he struggles a lot to start the season, DeBoer might keep Zids on a short leash. There are a lot of young defensemen waiting and if Zidlicky continues to struggle, losing Alexander Urbom to waivers is that much more painful.
The Islanders are a fast team and the Devils defense needs to keep up and they clearly had trouble doing that with a fast Pittsburgh team. New York isn’t Pittsburgh, but they do resemble them when it comes to moving down the ice.
