New York, N.Y. - The New Jersey Devils took on their red hot rival New York Rangers in enemy territory tonight, but the Devils stole the game.
The Devils were on their heels for a lot of the first and second periods, but the defense never broke.
Ryan Carter netted his first two-goal game in over three years, but it was perfect timing as he took the momentum away from the Rangers with a last minute second period goal.
Carters first goal he skated by the defense and threw the puck in front of the net and it bounced off of a skate of a Ranger defenseman.
Carter’s late period goal was a backhand that went right through the five-hole of Henrik Lundqvist. The goal was extremely important, giving the Devils the momentum heading into the third.
The game was defensive until a flurry of offensive pressure late in the third.
Dan Girardi knotted the game up at 13:18 with a slap shot from the point that bounced off of Adam Larsson’s skate and just out of the reach of Brodeur’s glove.
But then just under four minutes later, Dainius Zubrus tapped in a puck bouncing in front of Ludqvist to put the final nail in the coffin.
The game was as intense as it always, but the Devils defeated the Rangers for the second time this year in as many games.
The Devils have a tough weekend ahead of them playing the Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins on back-to-back nights at home. But at least they do not have to travel late at night and play the next day.
