Patrik Elias Injury Update, Gionta Update, Word on the Street

There was some good news at New Jersey Devils practice today regarding the Patrik Elias injury (back spasms) and Stephen Gionta. They both returned to practice today and jumped in their respective lines. Jacob Josefson and Mattias Tedenby returned to being extras and the Devils forwards are back to being completely healthy (minus Ryane Clowe).

Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the defense. Jon Merrill remains on IR for now and Anton Volchenkov is back to sitting on the bench with a pulled leg muscle (Tom Gulitti).

Mark Fayne jumped on the last defensive pair with Peter Harrold and it looks like it will be like that for the weekend. Volchenkov has already been ruled out for tomorrow’s grudge match and could very well be ruled out for Saturday’s game against the Penguins.

The Devils will not have to open a roster spot as the spot has been open ever since Jon Merrill went to IR. Elias and Gionta will likely play but Pete DeBoer just wants to make sure that they feel good in the morning before making the official call.

Elias jumped in at center between Damien Brunner and Michael Ryder while Gionta stepped in between Ryan Carter and Cam Janssen.

The Devils had shootout practice today and Tom Gulitti revealed the results on Twitter today:

Gulitti also revealed that DeBoer mentioned that today’s results could put Marek Zidlicky in the shootout “mix.”

Here are a couple news articles from around the web:

The Devils will be facing the Los Angeles Kings in a 2012 Stanley Cup Rematch tomorrow night at the Prudential Center. It will be the first time they have met since the Cup Finals due to the lockout.
