Jon Merrill has been activated off of IR and was immediately sent to Albany. He traded places with Anton Volchenkov on injured reserve, and now the Devils officially have 6 defensemen in California right now. Lou Lamoriello didn’t seem in much of a hurry to call up someone from Albany. The Devils now have a roster spot in limbo.

Something just simply doesn’t add up. If the Devils had no roster spots to keep Merrill it would be one thing, but the fact that they now have a vacant spot on the roster and are not indicating a move before Wednesday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks is very odd.

Just in case you thought that there might be a surprise injury return, Ryane Clowe and Bryce Salvador have not resumed skating yet. After Albany’s game on Wednesday, they are off until after Thanksgiving so maybe Lou wants to wait until Albany has a bunch of days off so they don’t feel shorthanded either.

Nonetheless, Volchenkov’s designation is retroactive to November 12th.

The Devils had a late practice today with the start time being 5 PM EST due to practicing in Anaheim today. The game tomorrow night will begin at 10 PM EST at the Honda Center.

There are a few candidates to call up from Albany should they look for a third extra forward (as preposterous as that sounds).
