Tom Gulitti has just reported that Jon Merrill has been given a second chance with New Jersey. He also reported that Adam Larsson is likely out from when he crashed into the boards in San Jose on Saturday.
I was just typing a post about Joe Whitney crediting an open roster spot as a possible reason to be called up for a very short amount of time but that theory just went by the boards (no pun intended).
Merrill deserves a second chance after playing 3 shifts for New Jersey in his first NHL stint. He suffered nasty lacerations, had stitches, the whole 9 yards.
How long he stays in the NHL is very shady at the moment. Eric Gelinas proved himself in the NHL however, and he snatched a roster spot at least for the time being with Bryce Salvador in limbo with his stress fracture.
Anton Volchenkov is also skating this morning and is showing signs of returning soon. Hopefully, Merrill can snag a roster spot and maybe force the Devils to send down either Peter Harrold or Mark Fayne. If the Devils want to avoid waivers, Merrill is still waiver exempt and can be thrown around between Albany and Newark an unlimited amount of times.
Martin Brodeur is also skating today. This is a great sign after his scary injury in San Jose.
Brodeur is in the net the Devils will defend in the first and third periods tonight. Usually indicates the starter.

This makes things very interesting as the general understanding, including Tom Gulitti, was that Cory Schneider will start tonight.
Stephen Gionta is not practicing today after re-injuring his ankle and may finally be seeing some extended (until Thanksgiving) rest until he comes back.
Tom Gulitti reported that the defensive lines are Andy Greene – Marek Zidlicky, Eric Gelinas – Mark Fayne, Jon Merrill – Peter Harrold. This is a little puzzling as Gelinas and Merrill have a history of playing well together. We will see if these are the lines tonight.
Jacob Josefson has jumped in the last line and is centering Cam Janssen and Ryan Carter.
The Devils will be taking on the Winnipeg Jets tonight at the Prudential Center.
