Jon Merrill’s recent call up was for “emergency” purposes with the injury to Adam Larsson. One question still remains about the whole situation: Is the Jon Merrill recall for the long term?
The answer to that question is very shady. Eric Gelinas proved that with some opportunities, the defensive youth movement can finally begin in New Jersey.
Considering that Merrill may have been called up solely as backup is a little worrying. Once Anton Volchenkov returns (and he is reportedly close), Merrill may be sent back down to Albany. Hopefully, Merrill will get another chance to prove himself tonight.
If Larsson is healthy, maybe Pete DeBoer will look to rest Peter Harrold or Mark Fayne.
Merrill did not receive an opportunity anything close to substantial in his first stint with New Jersey when he played 3 shifts and then crashed into the boards in Minnesota and had nasty lacerations around his eye.
Hopefully, Lou Lamoriello will keep Merrill around long enough to try to prove his worth to the team.
After all, Eric Gelinas is pretty much a regular on the defense. He started out as just another recall due to injury and instantly impressed the Devils brass.
All you need is just one chance.
