New Jersey Devils Injury Report - 11/27

The New Jersey Devils are skating this morning in preparation for tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes at the Prudential Center.

Tom Gulitti provided updates for quite a few of injuries that the Devils are dealing with right now.

Seth Helgeson was recalled from AHL Albany today to provide emergency support in case Anton Volchenkov or Eric Gelinas are unable to play tonight. Helgeson is reportedly skating without a number on his helmet.

Both Volchenkov and Gelinas are skating in practice this morning.

Earlier, I mentioned that Jon Merrill may not be staying very long as he was merely emergency support for Larsson. Adam is not skating this morning, however Lou Lamoriello said the layoff “shouldn’t be long.”

Stephen Gionta was placed on IR retroactive to Saturday and that opened up a spot for Helgeson. Lamoriello also said that Helgeson could be returned later today if Volchenkov “and/or” Gelinas play tonight.

While it is exciting to see the Devils open up a roster spot at forward, that spot may be filled very quickly if Volchenkov returns tonight as he is still on injured reserve.

It is also to see what happens at defense if they both do indeed return tonight. The Devils could have 1 extra at forward and technically 2 extra defenders. Larsson sounds like he will just remain a healthy scratch for now.

If Larsson does indeed stay off of IR, he will be taking up a roster spot and if Helgeson is indeed returned, depending on how long Larsson is out, the Devils will be back to having little replacement on defense. The Devils would technically have 1 replacement at forward and 1 (0?) on defense.

If Lamoriello thinks that Larsson will be out for more than just a game or two, maybe it’s time to give someone at forward a shot in the NHL. Maybe….Joe Whitney? I have been lobbying his recall for a few days now.

Side Note: Bryce Salvador and Ryane Clowe have both been skating on their own.
