It wasn’t an exciting game, but in the end the New Jersey Devils came out on top for the second time in two nights. Cory Schneider pitched his second shutout of the season and Steve Bernier scored his second goal Saturday night in Newark, to give the Devils a 1-0 win over Buffalo.
Schneider only had to stop 15 shots to earn the shutout win. On the other side Sabre’s backup goal Jonas Enroth stopped 19 of 20 shots, and was spectacular all game.
Enroth denied Travis Zajac multiple times in this contest, including all alone in front with his glove. It looked like he would also earn a shutout forcing the game into overtime until 63:58 into the game.
Steve Bernier picked a great time to score his second of the season to keep up with the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals in the Metropolitan division.
Bernier entered the zone with Andy Greene, who fed Bernier at the left circle. Bernier then looked up and cut towards the slot and fired a wrist shot high, glove side to beat Enroth and give the Devils the two points.
Assisting with Greene was Adam Henrique who got into a scuffle as Bernier scored the game winner with Steve Ott.
That assist by Andy Greene gives him six points in his last 5 games for the Devils. Adam Henrique has earned a point in consecutive games for the second time this season.
The Devils’ next game is Monday in Montreal, where head coach Pete DeBoer confirmed that Martin Brodeur will start.
