First, I would like to apologize for being so delayed. I went to the game in Long Island tonight and it took me a long time to get back.
Uniondale, N.Y.- The New Jersey Devils traveled out to Long Island to face off against a struggling New York Islanders team. The Islanders were 1-2-1 in their last four games heading into tonight and added another tally in the loss column tonight.
The Devils got off to a better start than they had in their previous two games and scored the opening goal of the night at 11:37 in the first period. Adam Henrique received a great pass from rookie Reid Boucher to set up a great finish for the first score of the night.
The Islanders played very sloppy in the first and second periods, falling, turning it over, and whiffing on shots on a fairly consistent basis.
The Devils failed to take control of these mistakes and the game when a shot from Michael Ryder drilled the left post and did not cross the goal line.
The Devils penalty kill stopped all three of the Islanders man-advantages, one of which was during the crucial final minutes of the game.
The Islanders knotted the game up after turnovers from Travis Zajac and Bryce Salvador opened up an opportunity for Frans Nielsen.
Only two and a half minutes later the Devils answered back with a goal that was deflected off the shoulder of Travis Zajac. Marek Zidlcky took a one-timed shot from the top of the left circle that struck Zajac and went into the net. Zajac’s seventh of the year ended up being the game-winning-goal.
Cory Schneider had an awesome bounce-back performance tonight, stopping 30-of-31 shots.
The Devils will be off until Tuesday for their New Years matinee against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
