2014 World Junior Hockey Championships Semifinals Preview

Team Russia officially eliminated Team USA yesterday with a 5-3 win. Team USA started out the 2014 World Junior Hockey Championships in a blitskreig but started to slow down severely as the tournament waned on.

Stefan Matteau notched another goal to his tournament resume to tie the game up at one and Ryan Hartman would go on to tie the game at 2 in the first period. Nic Kerdiles scored the third goal for Team USA and gave the Americans a 3-2 lead.

Team Russia would go on to score 3 straight and take the victory in the first game of the Quarterfinals.

Team USA finished competition in the tournament with 3 wins and 2 losses. Team Russia moves to 3 wins and 2 losses.

In the second game of the Quarterfinals, Team Finland defeated Team Czech Republic by an identical score of 5-3. After the Czechs also took a 3-2 lead, Team Finland also scored 3 unanswered goals.

The Czechs finished with 1 win, 1 overtime win, and 3 losses. Team Finland moves on with a record of 3 wins, 1 loss, and 1 overtime loss.

The third Quarterfinal matchup saw Team Canada take on Team Switzerland. The game was pretty even going into the third period with the score 2-1 in favor of Canada but the shots were a little uneven at 18-11 in favor of Canada.

The Swiss would get off 9 shots and score 0 goals in the third period while the Canadiens fired off 5 on the net and scored two goals in the third period. It was just that kind of game.

The Swiss get eliminated with a record of 1 win, 1 overtime win, and 3 losses. Team Canada moves on with a record of 4 wins and 1 overtime loss.

Team Canada will take on Team Finland tomorrow in the second Semifinal matchup.

The last Quarterfinal matchup saw Team Sweden thrash Team Slovakia 6-0. This game wasn’t close by any stretch of the imagination as Sweden destroyed Slovakia in about every category including shots which was a staggering 40-18.

The Swedes will take on Team Russia in the first Semifinal matchup tomorrow.

Team Sweden advances with a perfect record of 5 wins. Team Slovakia ends their tournament at 1 win and 4 losses.

Slovakia should be happy they were not in the relegation round as they only advanced due to a head-to-head tiebreaker against Team Germany.

As for Team Germany, they lost the first relegation game 3-0 to Team Norway. The second game is currently underway with Team Norway leading 3-2 after the 2nd period.

Team Norway came into the relegation rounds with 4 losses but now has a chance to stay in the Top Division and finish with 2 wins and 4 losses. Team Germany now stands at 1 win and 4 losses and could possibly drop to 5 losses if they lose today. They would also be demoted out of the Top Division.
