Newark, N.J. - Cory Schneider and the New Jersey Devils shutout the Dallas Stars 1-0 Thursday night.
Schneider stopped all 26 shots he faced en route to his third shutout and sixth win of the season.
The Devils boosted their goal support for Schneider to a whopping 32 goals in 20 starts.
The Devils got tested plenty of times in the game, but were able to hold onto the shutout, even through a Stephen Gionta double-minor high-sticking penalty. The penalty was successfully killed and it seemed to take the life out of the Stars attack.
Michael Ryder scored the game winner 8:17 into the second period when Travis Zajac gave him a perfect feed in the slot to blow a wrister past Kari Lehtonen.
Lehtonen stood on his head tonight for the Stars, making 33 saves as the Stars were under siege by the Devils all game.
The defense played very well tonight, blocking 18 shots, further helping Schneider earn his sixth win.
Ryder continues to stay hot with his team leading 15th goal of the year. He now has scored in four of five games and 10 since the start of December.
Ryane Clowe registered the second assist on Ryder’s goal and now has three assists in his last five games.
The Devils needed this win badly and now sit just two points out of the eighth spot in the east and five points away from fifth.
The Devils will host the Florida Panthers on Saturday at the Prudential Center for their third home game of the week. The Devils need to put together a little streak moving forward from tonight’s game and a win over the struggling Panthers would help greatly.
