Buffalo Sabres 2, Washington Capitals 1 (SO)

The Buffalo Sabres clinched the season series against the Capitals with a shootout win that will push the record to 2-0 in a 3-game series.

Ryan Miller got the first star of the game. He earned his 12th win of the season after turning away 28 shots and posting a .966 save percentage. His only blemish was a goal allowed in the first period.

Philipp Grubauer earned the second star of the game. He turned away 30 shots and posted a .968 save percentage while earning his 4th overtime loss of the season. He gave up the equalizing goal in the first period.

Buffalo LW Tyler Ennis earned the third star after scoring the lone regulation goal for Buffalo in the first period. He scored his 9th goal of the season at 18:09 into the first period to tie up the game.

The Capitals earned a point to push them up into a tie with the New York Rangers for 2nd place in the Metropolitan Division at 51 points. The Sabres still sit at an NHL-worst 31 points but are catching up to the Edmonton Oilers who only have 35 points.

The last game between the two teams will be played on January 28th.
