Preview: New Jersey Devils vs St. Louis Blues

I have pretty much waited as long as I can before the game starts to post this. Shockingly, the game is still on tonight with the blizzard that is occurring outside of most of our windows tonight.

Anyway, this game seems to be happening despite, well, every other shred of evidence that would stop this game. If you are at the game tonight, be safe going to and from the arena.

The Devils and Blues will meet for the first time this season.

The Blues are a team that arguably contains the most depth in the NHL with guys like Alexander Steen, T.J. Oshie, and backed by Jaroslav Halak.

The Devils are a team that still truly looking for its identity and has yet to be thoroughly consistent on both ends of the ice.

The return of Damien Brunner could help that identity be found. Brunner had a huge slump for about a quarter of the season but was playing significantly better before he suffered a sprained MCL in December. The injury put him on the shelf for about 4 weeks and was activated off of injured reserve today.

Cam Janssen has cleared waivers and has been assigned to AHL Albany.

The Devils will be rolling with Cory Schneider tonight. Schneider is coming off a 2-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche in a game where he made 37 saves and was once again left out to dry by the Devils offense. Schneider now has a 7-9-7 record with 1.91 goals against average and a .924 save percentage.

After playing last night, Halak (20-7-3) may not play in tonight’s game. If he does indeed receive the night off, it will be Brian Elliot in net. Elliot is 13-3-2 this season.

The Devils are remarkably still only one point out of the wild card race but that will likely change tonight one way or the other. With 10 games tonight, the standings will likely shuffle. The Devils are also 5 points away from 3rd place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Devils have been absolutely horrific against the West this season going 4-9-5 to this point. They are 2-5-1 against the Central Division.

St. Louis is 14-2-1 against the opposite conference this season and 6-1-0 against the Metropolitan Division.
