St. Louis, MO - After the New Jersey Devils blew out the Saint Louis Blues one week ago by a score of 7-1, the Blues were looking for revenge. The Blues were very fired up and the game got very chippy, very fast.
The Devils almost got out to an early lead on a power play just nine seconds into the game. Michael Ryder had a wide open net, but his shot was blocked and the Blues killed the rest of the penalty.
After that power play, the Devils just did not play well. They were dominated by the Blues and gave up the first goal of the game just 3:25 into the first period.
Alex Steen scored his 27th goal of the year when his shot deflected off of defenseman Anton Volchenkov and beat Cory Schneider under the crossbar.
The Devils failed to get anything in the net on their four power play opportunities. They even gave up a power play goal in the third period that killed their hopes of a comeback win.
Eight minutes into the third period, Bryce Salvador took a tripping penalty that ultimately was the final nail in the coffin. The Devils were amidst killing the penalty when a very lucky deflection by Brenden Morrow went past Schneider. Jay Bouwmeester took a slap shot from the point as Morrow was skating by the net and got deflected down below the glove.
Things went down hill from there and the game started to get very physical. Multiple altercations started brewing and a few fights broke out.
Ryane Clowe got into a fight with Roman Polak as Maxim Lapierre scored an empty net goal. Clowe had a powerful uppercut that made Polak dazed and out of it. Clowe was definitely the winner in that bout.
The Devils were shut out for the sixth time this season, the last thing they need following a 7-3 abomination during the Stadium Series game.
The Devils will travel to Dallas on Thursday to take on the Stars for the last time this season. The Devils won the first meeting 1-0 on January 9th. The Devils are only a few points out of a playoff spot and desperately need a win.
