With the olympic break starting on Saturday, there has been much talk of which team is going to win the gold medal.

Here is a look at some of the top players for some of the teams heading to Sochi:

United States:
2010 - Silver Medal

Top Players - Patrick Kane, Zach Parise, Phil Kessel, Ryan Suter.

The USA hockey team may be a disappointment this olympics. The team passed on a few players that looked to be olympic locks. Bobby Ryan, Kyle Okposo, and Keith Yandle are among the players snubbed from the team. They looked for team chemistry rather than overall skill and stats. We will see how well this strategy works.

2010 - Gold Medal

Top Players - Sidney Crosby, John Tavares, Matt Duchene, Corey Perry.

Team Canada will be the favorites again to win the gold medal. This team is stacked from head to toe with all-star talent. One surprise here was that they passed on Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning. This was a shock considering that team Canada’s GM, Steve Yzerman is the GM of the Lightning.

2010 - Did Not Medal

Top Players - Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, Pavel Datsyuk Ilya Kovalchuk.

It is safe to say that the Russians will be playing their hearts out this year. Not only did they not earn a medal in 2010, they are playing in their home country. It will be a major let down if they fail to at least reach the podium.

2010 - Did Not Medal

Top Players - Daniel & Henrik Sedin, Alexander Steen, Daniel Alfredsson, Henrik Lundqvist.

It has been a long eight years since the Swedes won their olympic gold medal. A lot of star players have since retired, but could they be a surprise heading into Sochi? They have the goal scoring and goaltending to do so.

Dark Horse:

My selection for the dark horse of 2014 is the Czech Republic. The Czech’s have a few solid players in Jaromir Jagr, Patrik Elias, Tomas Plekanec, and Vladamir Sobotka. They have a veteran team full of players who have been there before. Do not count them out.
