Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record confirmed today that the New Jersey Devils have sent down D Jon Merrill so he is eligible to play in Albany during the Olympic Break.

Jon Merrill most recently scored his first NHL goal in a game-winning goal in Overtime against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night.

Merrill has played in 32 games and has 1 goal and 4 assists (5 points) and a plus/minus rating of -9. He also has 25 shots on goal and 6 penalty minutes this season (nhl.devils.com).

On February 5th, fellow colleague David Garrison started a poll asking what country will win Olympic Gold. 23 voters have submitted who they think will win:

Canada – 57% – 13 votes
Russia – 30% – 7 votes
Other – 9% – 2 votes
Sweden – 4% – 1 vote
United States – 0% – 0 votes

It’s no surprise that Canada is winning/won this poll. They are always the clear favorites to win in the Olympics and almost always put up a great showing. It is easy to believe that Russia could come out in first as they will be playing their hearts out in their home country.

The shocking result is that no one voted for the United States. Many people were very discouraged by the roster they put out. Even I voted for Canada before USA.
