NEWARK – Defenseman Eric Gelinas has been recalled from the Albany Devils this morning, which now gives the Devils eight defensemen on the roster.
Gelinas has been a massive bright spot this season for the Devils and it seems as though the team cannot win without him. The 22-year old defenseman has posted six goals and 16 assists through 44 games, but concerns have been raised by the coaches that he is a one-dimensional offensive defenseman. That was the main reasoning for him being sent down in January.
Now there has been trade speculation circling the room with eight defensemen currently on the roster, which is generally one too many.
Captain Bryce Salvador told Rich Chere of the Star Ledger, “I’ve been traded before. Once you’ve been traded, it takes a lot of that uncertainty off the way you look at it. You know the world doesn’t end when you get traded.”
However, the 38-year-old veteran has not been confronted by Lamoriello with the possibility of a trade. But it would make sense for the Devils to trade one of their veterans in Salvador, Anton Volchenkov, Peter Harrold, or Marek Zidlicky.
Playoff teams such as the Colorado Avalanche are in need of defensemen with experience and could make a trade. Not saying the Avs and Devils will make a deal, but veteran d-men are always in need at the deadline by a few teams. If the San Jose Sharks could trade the mediocre Douglas Murray for two second round picks, one of the defensemen listed could obtain something.
