Jagr netted #699 for his career, Elias tallied 3 points, and Adam Henrique had his 3rd 2-goal game of his career as the New Jersey Devils started off the final stretch strong with a 5-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Devils had good puck movement all night and seemed pretty fluid on the offensive end as they netted 5 goals. Scoring is going to be a paramount issue in the next 22 games after tonight and they need to put offensive showings such as this one to succeed and make the playoffs.
Ryane Clowe notched his 4th goal of the season to open up the scoring. Jaromir Jagr and Adam Henrique would score the next two goals on the powerplay. Jagr scored his 18th of the year and 699th of his career while Henrique would score his 15th at the time.
Two straight Columbus goals left many fans skeptical about the Devils holding the lead. On most nights, the Devils would have folded and lost in overtime or the shootout.
Tonight, Patrik Elias performed hockey’s version of the alley-oop as he fed Henrique on a beautiful feed to give the Devils a pivotal goal in the game. The shorthanded goal gave the Devils a 4-2 lead and completely reversed the momentum back in New Jersey’s favor.
Elias tried to feed Henrique again at the end of the game for the empty-net goal to give him a hat trick but it bounced off of a Blue Jacket’s skate and trickled into the net. Elias would finish with 1 goal and 2 assists on the game.
The Devils are now tied for 4th in the Metropolitan at 63 points and won a crucial game despite the Detroit Red Wings likely winning their game tonight. Detroit sits in the second wild card spot. The silver lining of that game is that they were playing the Ottawa Senators who will now stall at 63 points. Washington is winning their game 4-2 and Carolina is losing 2-0. Washington would move into 3rd in the wild card and 4th in the Metropolitan with the win. Carolina would still be 2 behind the Devils if they lose.
The Devils are back at it Saturday afternoon to take on the New York Islanders.
