New Jersey Devils General Manager Lou Lamoriello said that the team was going to be buyers this deadline, but only made one move.
TheNew Jersey Devils acquired forward Tuomo Ruutu from the Carolina Hurricanes for center Andrei Loktionov and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2017. Not sure what the conditions are, but I would assume it has to do with if Ruutu re-signs with the Devils or not.
Lamoriello said that the Hurricanes have retained some salary from Ruutu’s large cap hit of $4.75 million AAV through the 2015-16 season, but no one has said what the number is yet. The percentage the Canes will retain should be in the ballpark of 15-25%, leaving the Devils with anywhere from about $4.0375-$3.5625 million a year.
Ruutu, 31, has underperformed so far this season, but played extremely well for team Finland at the Olympic Games tallying one goal and four assists in six games. In the NHL he has only five goals and 11 assists with a +/- of -19 in 57 games. However, in his last full season (2011-12) he scored 18-goals and had 34-points.
Ruutu has some skill, but has not been able to use it playing on the Hurricanes this year. If they put him on the left-wing with Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr he will produce very well.
