Following the New Jersey Devils 4-3 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild Thursday night Jaromir Jagr had some words on the Devils’ playoff chances.
“Game 7 is always important. We’ve got 12 Game 7s left and we have to win all of them to get into the playoffs. The first one (Thursday against Minnesota) is behind us, and we have 12 to go.”
It looks as though the Devils will have to win all 12 of their remaining games, but is that really the case?
The Devils currently sit 11th in the Eastern Conference with 73 points, just five behind both the eighth place New York Rangers and seventh place Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals currently are one point behind the final two spots.
The playoff hopes look dim for the Devils after dropping three crucial games to Boston, Tampa Bay, and Florida. But they are not quite done yet. The win against the Wild was huge. If the Devils lost, you can kiss every last chance goodbye.
The magic number for reaching the playoffs is 92 points, 19 more than the Devils have now. Which means they have to go 9-2-1 to reach 92.
The team to watch here is the Toronto Maple Leafs, who sit currently in sixth place with 80-points. They have lost three straight very well could have a monumental collapse in their final 11-games.
The Eastern Conference is extremely tight right now and anyone could make the final two spots up for grabs. If the Devils can strike fire in these final games they will make it. It is just a matter of if and when they will catch fire.
