At least SOMEBODY in the Devils organization can win a shootout.
The Albany Devils clinched a Calder Cup Playoffs Berth with a 3-2 shootout win over the Portland Pirates.
After a scoreless first period that saw Albany edge Portland in shots, Greg Carey registered his first career goal early in the second period to give Portland the 1-0 lead. Reid Boucher answered right back about a quarter of the way into the 2nd with his 22nd goal of the season. Dan Kelly gave the Devils the lead with his 3rd goal of the season towards the back end of the period.
Albany entered the third with a 20-10 shots on goal advantage. 7:19 into the third Portland’s Lucas Lessio tied up the game with his 29th goal of the season.
The game would go into overtime as the Devils would tally 2 shots and leave Portland shotless.
In the shootout, with Portland shooting first, Tim Kennedy missed his chance and Mattias Tedenby responded with a miss of his own. Jordan Szwarz would open the shootout scoring and Reid Boucher didn’t convert his chance as the shootout entered Round 3 with a score of 1-0 Portland.
Andy Miele missed his shot and Stefan Matteau tied up the shootout at 1 going into the 4th round. Brandon Yip missed and Mike Sislo made his chance to give Albany the 2-1 lead and put Portland on the ropes.
In Round 5, Greg Carey missed his shootout opportunity and the Devils won the game.
Keith Kinkaid made 20 saves and registered the win while Kelly Zajac notched 2 assists.
The Devils will play the regular season finale on Saturday at 5 PM at the Times Union Center against the Springfield Falcons.
