Many decisive games took place on the 10th day of the 2014 IIHF World Championships.
In Group A, Canada took on Sweden in a battle of the top 2 in Group A and the only 2 in the group to have already clinched a spot in the Playoff round.
The game would be 2-2 at the end of regulation and Canada took the OT decision to earn the 2-point victory. Canada (4-1-1-0) and Sweden (4-1-1-0) are now tied for first in the group with 15 points. Both teams have one more game remaining.
The other game in Group A saw Czech Republic earn a big victory over Norway, 1-0. The Czech Republic (2-1-2-1) moved up to 3rd place with 10 points while Norway (2-0-1-3) stall at 7 points. Norway is currently in a tie for 4th place with France and Slovakia.
In Group B, Team USA pulled out a huge win over Finland to gain 3 important points and clinch a spot in the Playoff round. Team USA (3-1-0-2) is the second team out of Group B to clinch a spot in the Playoff round and stand in 2nd place with 11 points, 7 behind Team Russia. Finland (2-1-0-3) stalls at 8 points and is currently sitting just out of Playoff contention in 5th place.
Russia continued their dominance in the competition with 3 goals in the 3rd period to top Germany, 3-0. Russia (6-0-0-0) steamrolls ahead and now has 18 points along with a goal differential of +23. Germany (1-1-0-4) has now been eliminated from playoff contention and stand in 7th with 5 points. They are not in danger of being relegated, however, as Kazakhstan has already clinched that spot.
(7) Denmark vs (T-4) France – Denmark will try to stave off elimination as they are only 2 points ahead of last-place Italy, but will still have a game in hand after tomorrow’s games. France currently owns the #4 spot due to goal differential but still find them in tight race for a playoff spot. They will also have another game to play after tomorrow.
(8) Italy vs (T-1) Sweden – Italy will play its last game of the competition and hope that Denmark can collapse in the process to avoid relegation. The Italians need to win and hope that Denmark loses their two games. Italy was promoted for this year’s competition. Sweden will play their last game and try to do their best to secure the #1 spot in the group.
(8) Kazakhstan vs (5) Finland – Kazakhstan will play their last game before being demoted to Division IA for next year’s competition. Finland is hoping for a regulation win that would push them ahead of the loser of Latvia vs Belarus.
(T-3) Latvia vs (T-3) Belarus – This game will put either team in a great position to clinch a spot into the Playoff round. With just 2 games left including this one, a regulation win would be huge for either team.
