Rich Chere of NJ.com reported today that GM Lou Lamoriello is still unsure of whether or not they will use their last compliance buyout on a player.
The main speculation points to Anton Volchenkov or Bryce Salvador receiving that compliance buyout that would see their cap hit disappear. The player that is not bought out via compliance buyout could also be bought out traditionally with their salary being stretched out over more years.
It makes sense why the Devils may not have bought out either player yet. More so for Volchenkov, the Devils could be asking around to other teams to see if they would take on Volchenkov’s contract. Volchenkov is still relatively productive on the defense side of things with shot blocking and physicality but has become a liability of sorts with plenty of younger defensemen coming up through the ranks for the Devils.
Of course, this speculation could seem a little premature as the buyout window just opened. It could simply be Lou being Lou by waiting until the last minute. Getting rid of at least one of these two guys is imperative for next season. This team will not improve with both of them on the current roster and shutting out more youth. Once the 2014 NHL Draft passes, things will likely become clearer as teams will conclude trading for the most part as attention focuses to Free Agency.
There is certainly more to come with this story.
