GM Lou Lamoriello mentioned in June that it is a priority this summer to lock up Cory Schneider for more than this season. Cory is set to become an Unrestricted Free Agent next summer.
Lamoriello told Tom Gulitti that he hopes to close the deal very soon and that they have been talking about an extension for a few weeks now.
Schneider is set to become the team’s #1 goalie after the seemingly-imminent departure of Martin Brodeur. With the signings of Keith Kinkaid and Scott Clemmensen, it looks like the Devils are ready to move forward with Cory and give him the #1 spot that he deserves.
Tom also mentioned that Lou will open negotiations with D Andy Greene in regards to a contract extension of his own. Greene is also set to become an Unrestricted Free Agent next summer. With everything that has happened recently with Zach Parise and David Clarkson, it is important for the Devils to lock up the guys that they want to keep. There will certainly be teams eyeing both Schneider and Greene next summer should he reach Free Agency so locking them up is important.
Schneider will likely make around $5 million a year as he is already making $4 million for next season. Greene is making $3 million for this season and will likely see at least $4 million for his next contract.
Both guys will be franchise players and they will definitely want to be paid like one, similar to how Travis Zajac is being paid right now.
