On today’s New Jersey Devils Daily, the team chooses the right night to honor Patrik Elias, a deep look at the Devils system and what Damon Severson could earn in his next contract.

The New Jersey Devils just announced that Patrik Elias will be honored with his number retirement on February 24th against the New York Islanders. It’s obvious that the team was never going to use a rivalry game against the Rangers and Flyers for such a special night, so this is the next best thing. Elias has more points against the Islanders than any other team. He took his final warmup against New York’s other team. It’s also the perfect time in the season for a pick-me-up for the young players on this team.

What could Damon Severson command from the Devils in his next contract? Tyler Kelley with Pucks and Pitchforks takes a look at the defenseman’s next contract. He looks at the two options the Devils have with Severson; a bridge contract or a long-term deal. He looks at the possibility that the deal could bite them in the end, but he thinks the Devils should shoot for a longer deal rather than a shorter one.

New Jersey Devils: What’s Going On With Damon Severson?

Chris Ryan with NJ.com takes a look at the Devils weakest forward position, right wing. Looking at the depth he displays in the article makes it seem like it might be worse than we once thought. Kyle Palmieri is head and shoulders above everyone else on the list. Right after him is, Stefan Noesen? There is nobody who will say that Noesen is a second-line player right now, so the Devils need to figure something out, like playing other players out of position.

All About the Jersey is asking for fans help to choose the team’s best players under the age of 25. Most years, this would be a depressing practice, but this year is much different. After a great draft by general manager Ray Shero, headlines by number-one overall pick Nico Hischier, the talent pool looks as deep as it has in years. Just think, last year Reid Boucher made the top five of this list. This year, he couldn’t make the top 15.

Brian Franken with AATJ talks about the opportunities that present themselves for the Devils right now. The Devils have something that most teams can’t offer upcoming free agent Will Butcher; ice time. He points out the Devils have used a plethora of defenders over the past few seasons, and while it looks like they have some depth right now, that usually doesn’t last.
