Pucks and Pitchforks looks at the effect Travis Zajac’s pectoral injury has on the plans for first-overall pick Nico Hischier. The team could be tempted to rocket him into the top six, but John Hynes should refrain. If he doesn’t seem like he’s ready to play 19-20 minutes per game on an 82 game schedule, an injury shouldn’t force it. His development depends on the team making the right decisions this season.

That doesn’t mean he won’t make the opening night roster, but it’s hard to believe if he’s not on the bottom line. Kelley put Ben Lovejoy on the bottom line after he played top-line minutes last season. I doubt anyone would complain about that.

Todd Correll with Hockey Buzz scooped reporters, saying talks with Damon Severson are expected to resume today. He says they aren’t far apart on a deal, but we’ve heard that before. The Devils need to make a long-term offer to their best defenseman and soon. He shouldn’t be a distraction going into one of the most important camps in years.
