Newark, N.J. - The New Jersey Devils continued to play dismal with another loss tonight. Despite a rally, the defensemen did not play very well at all. In fact, they would have been more effective on the bench.

The first period was all Boston Bruins. The B’s got off to a hot start with a goal 1:10 into the first period from Gregory Campbell. Less than four minutes later, Daniel Paille scored a shorthanded goal. There was no defense helping Martin Brodeur, it was embarrassing for the Devils.

Apr 10, 2013; Newark, NJ, USA; New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur (30) makes a pad save on Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk. Mandatory Credit: Ed Mulholland – USA TODAY Sports

The Bruins got another shorthanded chance on a breakaway for Johnny Boychuk. Marek Zidlicky hooked him after Boychuk came out of the penalty box. Brodeur had a great stop to keep the game within two.

However, the Devils got down three on Campbell’s second goal of the game. Once again, Brodeur had no chance at saving the shot that was deflection. It was the Bruins second shorthanded goal.

The Devils had eight power play minutes and still could not figure out how to score. In fact, they got scored on twice. The defensive play was one of the worst this season. Not one defenseman got back on defense, it was a lazy performance overall.

THe Devils gave up a power play goal from Zdeno Chara to go down 4-0 three minutes into the second period.

After a Patrick Elias goal, the Devils got a shorthanded goal for themselves. Travis Zajac forced a turnover at the blue line and beat backup goaltender Anton Khudobin.

Goals from Andy Greene and Matt D’Agostini in the third proved to be not enough for the Devils. Mark Fayne left Tyler Seguin alone in front to score the fifth Bruins goal. It was the final blow to the Devils hopes of a comeback.

Apr 10, 2013; Newark, NJ, USA; Boston Bruins center Gregory Campbell (11) scores a goal on New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur (30) during the first period at the Prudential Center. Mandatory Credit: Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

The factor that broke the Devils was their horrid power play. With 16 minutes having a man advantage, the Devils should have gotten a power play goal, but in fact gave up two shorthanded goals.

Overall, the Devils defense played so bad. Toward the end of the game, Zidlicky looked lost on the ice. He was staying away from the play and had a very lazy performance.

The Devils play again Friday night against the Ottawa Senators at the Prudential Center. At this point of the season, if the Devils do not win Friday, there is no chance that they will make the playoffs.

Other Facts:
Attendance - 17,625

1st Star - Gregory Campbell (2 goals)
2nd Star - Jaromir Jagr (2 assists)
3rd Star - Travis Zajac (Goal)

Other Notes

Coach DeBoer announced the following line-up changes for tonight’s game:

-Henrik Tallinder will play for Adam Larsson

-Matt D’Agostini and Alexei Ponikarovsky will be back in the line-up

-Tom Kostopoulos and Jacob Josefson will sit tonight.

Around the League:

The only other game being played in the NHL tonight with playoff implications for the Devils is the tilt at Madison Square Garden. The New York Rangers host the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7:00, and the Devils would love a Maple Leaf regulation victory. I am counting Toronto in the playoffs. Most important is a win for them though.

Be sure to tune in to the NBC Sports Network at 7:30 for tonight’s action. If the Devils are serious about making the playoffs, they need two points tonight.
