Newark, N.J. - the New Jersey Devils came out with a fire lit under them.

The power play had one of the most successful games in 2013 with two goals in four chances. Patrik Elias gave the Devils a 1-0 lead 13:55 into the first period on a breakaway during a power play. Elias split the gap between two defensemen giving him the opportunity to go bar-down over the blocker of Carey Price.

Jacob Josefson extended the Devils lead just 2:41 later with his first goal of the season.

Apr 23, 2013; Newark, NJ, USA; The New Jersey Devils celebrate a goal by center Jacob Josefson (9) during the first period of their game against the Montreal Canadiens at the Prudential Center. The hot start continued into the second period as Steve Sullivan redirected a pass by Marek Zidlicky for the Devils second power play goal and what would be the game-winning-goal.

The Habs later cut the lead down to one with goals from Max Pacioretty and Lars Eller, but it was not enough to beat Martin Brodeur.

Brodeur earned his 44th win in 68 career games. The wins also include nine shutouts. Brodeur always seems to bring his A-game when the Devils play against his hometown Montreal Canadiens.

Alexander Urbom made his 2013 debut tonight. The 6’5″ 215-pound defenseman registered 14:11 ice time tonight. Urbom played in five games last season.

Although the Devils are not going to qualify for the playoffs, winning out the rest of the season gives some confidence and leaves the fans happy going into the offseason.

Apr 23, 2013; Newark, NJ, USA; New Jersey Devils right wing Stephen Gionta (11) and goalie Martin Brodeur (30) celebrate the Devils 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens at the Prudential Center. The Devils defeated the Canadiens 3-2. Mandatory Credit: Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports

However, there are two sides to every story, so the flip side of winning the rest of the year is the Devils have a lesser chance at winning the draft lottery. In addition, if the Devils do not win the lottery, winning will give them a worse draft pick. Either way, the Devils will have a pick around the top ten in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, held at the Prudential Center.

The Devils play their last home game of the 2013 season Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The game will have no effect on the playoffs as the Penguins have already clinched the Eastern Conference.

Other Facts:
Attendance - 15-219

1st Star - Steve Sullivan (Goal, Assist)
2nd Star - Patrik Elias (Goal)
3rd Star - Lars Eller (Goal)
