Anton Volchenkov was a major contributor for the New Jersey Devils in last night’s 3-2 shootout win over the Winnipeg Jets. In a game that the Devils desperately needed to win, Volchenkov gave up his body for his team.

Anton, third on the Devils with 33 blocked shots in 22 games played, came up huge in the third period. After an Ilya Kovalchuk tripping penalty 1:03 into the period, Volchenkov was one of four Devils penalty killers on the ice. Evander Kane, who scored the game tying goal earlier in the second period appeared to have found a golden shooting lane from the point, but Volchenkov had other ideas.

#28 for New Jersey sacrificed his body and took Kane’s shot directly in the back. Volchenkov went down to the ice, but was unable to initially get to the bench because the puck was kept in the zone by the Jets. As the play continued and Volchenkov hobbled to his feet, he was able to muster the strength to attempt a diving sweep check. This was successful, and the Devils were able to clear the zone to allow for a change in their penalty killers. Volchenkov headed directly to the locker room, and at this point all thought that his night was over.

Anton Volchenkov, the ironman for the New Jersey Devils in last night’s 3-2 shootout victory over the Winnipeg Jets.
After a brief visit to the locker room, Volchenkov was back on the bench. He may not have even missed a single shift! The crowd at Prudential Center was shocked to see him back on the ice so quickly, especially when he almost gave the Devils a 3-2 lead on a two on one after leaving the bench.

Volchenkov would make one more outstanding play before the Devils pulled out the victory in the shootout. Still a tie game, Zach Bogosian ripped a slap shot hoping to give the Jets the two points in the standings. However, Volchenkov sacrificed his foot this time and blocked Bogosian’s shot. Anton’s night ended here as his foot required X-rays.

Luckily, the X-rays came back negative. It seems that he will be in the lineup when the Devils face off against the Philadelphia Flyers at 7:30 on Wednesday at the Prudential Center in Newark. One wouldn’t expect anything different from last night’s New Jersey Devils ironman.

Newark, N.J. - The New Jersey Devils faced off against the Winnipeg Jets tonight in their season finale. The Devils lost the previous two match-ups against the Jets.

The Devils were trying to redeem themselves after coming off of a 6-3 loss in Carolina last night.

The Devils came out hot, bombarding the Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavalec with 11 shots in the first period. The Devils scored two goals within two minutes of each other in the first period. Ryan Carter opened up the scoring with a backhander past Pavalec. Then shortly after Stephen Gionta scored the second goal. Both goals were their third of the season.

Johan Hedberg played very well after letting up five goals last night in Carolina. The Jets first goal was deflected in by Devils defenseman Andy Greene at 16:17 in the first period.

The Jets got their second and final goal when Evander Kane got the puck at the blue-line and sniped it past a helpless Hedberg.

After a scoreless overtime the game had to be decided by a shootout. The Devils were 1-3 in shootouts entering tonight, but Hedberg made great saves on the Jets. Patrik Elias got the game-winning-goal to allow the Devils to get their second win in three games.

Patrik Elias scoring the game-winning-goal in the shootout over the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday. The win moved the Devils into seventh in the Eastern Conference Standings and above the New York Rangers. The Devils are only two points away from the fifth place Toronto Maple Leafs.

Henrik Tallinder still remained out of the lineup tonight. It is his third consecutive game missed due to a lower-body injury.

The captain, Bryce Salvador, returned to the lineup today after not making the trip to Carolina for last night’s game due to an upper-body injury. Salvador played very well tonight preventing the Jets from getting many opportunities to score.

The Devils next game is against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday in Newark. The Devils won their first meeting of the season with a 3-0 shutout.

The Devils look to build off of this win and try to climb back up in the standings.
