On today’s New Jersey Devils Daily, we look at the Brian Boyle signing, which fell under the radar after losing Kevin Shattenkirk and the Marcus Johansson trade. Also, Adam Henrique’s future and Rollie Melanson’s move to New Jersey.
Ken Jones with Pucks and Pitchforks looks at the many options still at the table to fix the team’s defense. While the frenzy of free agency is over, general manager Ray Shero still has moves to make. The team’s defense was the most glaring hole last season, and a trade for Mirco Mueller does not change that. The most interesting option is the international market.
New Jersey Devils Options To Improve Defense
John Fischer with All About The Jersey looks at Adam Henrique’s down season through advanced statistics. Despite a major drop in counting numbers, Henrique still finds himself as a second line forward. The most glaring stat to me was the effect he had when he was playing with Michael Cammalleri and Lee Stepniak two seasons ago. Last season, Stepniak was in Carolina and Cammalleri saw his production go completely silent.

Jason Botchford with The Province looks at the end of an era for the Vancouver Canucks, who lose goalie coach Roliie Melancon to the Devils. It talks about some of the goalies he’s mentored, including in my opinion his best work with Jakob Markstrom. He was close to done with his NHL career after showing promise with the Florida Panthers, but couldn’t put it all together until he went to Vancouver.
Melanson’s departure is the end of an era for Canucks goaltending
Todd Coreel with Hockey Buzz takes a long, hard look at the Devils one free agent signing, bringing in center Brian Boyle. His play on the ice with help the young kids take on more of the offensive responsibilities, something they can excel at. His off the ice addition is unmatched, and he can help all the young kids become true NHL players.
What are the New Jersey Devils getting in Brian Boyle?
Boyle also spoke with NHL Tonight in reference to his choice to join the Devils. He talked about the influence Cory Schneider brought to his decision. Boyle also went into what he thinks this team is as currently constructed.
