On today’s New Jersey Devils Daily, the NHL profiles Nico Hischier, stories from the start of development camp and a bold prediction on Cory Schneider.
NHL.com’s Mike Morreale talks about Nico Hischier. This is the most the league’s site talked about a Devils player in what feels like decades. This time, they go over Hischier’s ability to move to wing, but his desire to stay at center. It goes into where Hischier needs to prove himself, and also goes into some little known facts about the Swiss centerman. Those facts include where he learned his impeccable work ethic and why he’s excited to hit the Jersey Shore.

Nico also talks to the Devils about what happened when he went home to Switzerland, what he’s looking forward to at this week’s camp and a special gift he received back home. It’s great to see his personality come out and show he actually likes going through these interviews. While most of the questions are pretty easy answers, his personality definitely looks like the best pick at number one.
It’s not often I disagree with the opinions of fellow Devils writers, but that’s what I am doing with the latest article from All About The Jersey. CJ Turtoro, in his opinion, calls Cory Schneider a liability. Some of the statistics in the article are reaching to make a point. Saying he’s on the decline because his save percentage went down four out of five years ignores the fact that last year was the only real decline. Most of those other years he was near the top of the NHL. Also, he’s not your typical 30 year old goalie. Most netminders his age have at least 400 games under their belt, but because of certain situations in his career he only has 232. There are a lot of miles left on those tires, despite one bad season. I get what the facts say, but just don’t come to the same conclusion.
Schneider Will Be a Liability to the Devils Sooner or Later
Chris Ryan with NJ.com talks to Miles Wood, who made some interesting claims during development camp. He says he wants to be the guy that leads this team. A lofty expectation from a 21 year old winger with one year of NHL experience under his belt. Pucks and Pitchforks covered why Wood should pair with Hischier earlier this week, and these comments show he may be ready to do so. Wood also talks about pacing himself this season, after he clearly lost steam towards the end of last year.

Ryan also talked about two injuries keeping prospects out of this week’s camp. John Quenneville and Brandon Gignac will be held out of this week’s festivities for precautionary reasons. While it is good that neither is dealing with anything serious, both players could have made major strides this week. Quennevill especially since he is looking to make the roster from opening night this season.
