On today’s New Jersey Devils Daily, Nico Hischier wants to be Pavel Datsyuk, how many young forwards is too many and the Devils current network may be for sale.
ESPN’s Dave Caldwell did a long profile on New Jersey Devils number one pick Nico Hischier. The prevailing thought in the article was Nico’s comparison to former Red Wings’ great Pavel Datsyuk. Devils fans would love to have a player of Datsyuk’s caliber for 14 years (hopefully longer without the KHL calling). Caldwell also talks about Ray Shero’s reasoning why he chose Hischier over Nolan Patrick, who was the consensus number one pick for most of the season.

Chris Ryan with NJ.com takes a look at some of the Devils top prospects and where they might end up this season. Some of them are obvious, like MacKenzie Blackwood going to the AHL and Joey Anderson spending another season with Minnesota-Duluth. Others aren’t so obvious. Nathan Bastian may be able to fight his way on the Opening Night roster or could spend another season with Mississauga. He also talks about a worst case scenario where Nico Hischier doesn’t spend the season in the NHL.

Andrew Gross with Northjersey.com takes a look at the plethora of young prospects on the Devils roster, and what the right number of young guys is to have on one team. The Devils will likely surpass that number no matter what, with a lack of veteran presence on the team. There are some players who could surprise and crack the opening right roster. One of which is Nikita Popugaev. The Russian fourth round pick plummeted down draft boards before falling to the Devils. The team hopes that will motivate him to become the best player he can be.
Devils: How many are too many young forwards?
Pucks and Pitchforks looks at the slight possibility that Dalton Prout could be a useable defenseman for the Devils this season. Most of it has to do with the fact it really can’t get much worse. He had two seasons where he wasn’t atrocious, and yes that is a compliment for him. Maybe he can put something together to actually contribute this season.

Josh Kosman with the New York Post talks about the sale of the MSG Network, the channel that locally plays the Devils in the New York area. Unfortunately, there is a huge price tag on the network that suitors aren’t willing to pay. At one point many thought Fox was in the mix, but that claim is no longer valid. Who knows what a change in ownership would do to the Devils on TV, but being in limbo definitely doesn’t help.
