On today’s New Jersey Devils Daily, the Devils chances at signing Will Butcher, how much Damon Severson will command on his next contract and how John MacLean’s media gig helped him get the job in Arizona.

Chris Ryan with NJ.com talks about the impending free agency of defenseman Will Butcher. The recent college graduate is coming off a season where he won the Hobey Baker Award and led the University of Denver to an NCAA Championship. Ryan correctly points out the Devils need to make a move on Butcher, but will have competition. Since Butcher will sign a similar contract no matter where he plays, the opportunity in New Jersey will be the Wild Card for the Devils.

Would defenseman Will Butcher make sense for the Devils?

Gerard Lionetti with All About the Jersey talks about what contract fans should expect Damon Severson to command. The lone remaining restricted free agent has two options. He could sign a short term deal for less money per season that would take him to unrestricted free agency, or a long-term deal where the Devils could buy some of those unrestricted years, of course for a price. Because of Severson’s potential on the blue line, the Devils should sign him to the long-term deal. They can pay now instead of paying huge later.

Pucks and Pitchforks looks at the underrated Ray Shero. He was recently ranked in the bottom half of all GMs. We look at why that ranked is way too low. Shero has made great moves in free agency, the draft and on the trade market. He deserves more respect on a national scale.

New Jersey Devils General Manager Remains Underrated

New Arizona Coyotes assistant coach John MacLean talks with Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports to say how his job as Devils analyst helped him become a better coach. He said the media gig helped him become more understanding of the rest of the league. The 52 year old talked about his desire to move into a more day-to-day role in the NHL, which he gets on the Yotes.

Joseph Cattana with The Whig talks about Taylor Hall’s charitable contributions. It’s the fourth year of the Taylor Hall Charity Ball Hockey Tournament, taking place in Kingston this weekend. 27 other current and former NHL players will join Hall to put this together. The article does a great job looking into what Hall is doing for his old community. It really makes Devils fans proud to see their star player doing great things to those who don’t have as much.
