On today’s New Jersey Devils Daily, the team comes from behind to score a huge win in Ottawa, Nico Hischier scores his first goal in the NHL and cracking Keith Kinkaid’s code.
The New Jersey Devils continue to ride a wave of momentum, coming from behind to beat the Ottawa Senators. James O’Brien with NBC Sports recaps the team’s huge win, and the cloud of doubt that comes out of it. Cory Schneider left the game in the second intermission with a lower-body injury. It seemed like after he was run into on Derick Brassard’s goal. His lateral movement was just bad, causing the Sens to score three goals in the period. Nico Hischier had a huge night, scoring the first two goals of the game and assisting on the overtime game winner.
Schneider injury puts damper on Devils win, Hischier’s big night
Speaking of Nico, Ken Bagley wrote his first article for Pucks and Pitchforks about Hischier’s big night. The first-overall pick can take some pressure off now that he’s finally lit the lamp for the first time. Hischier just came off his best performance of his short career against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and follows it up with two goals and a game-winning assist. Hopefully he can continue that momentum tonight against the San Jose Sharks.
New Jersey Devils: Nico Hischier’s First Goal Takes The Pressure Off
With Cory Schneider’s injury, Kinkaid may have to take a larger role in net. Obviously, it’s never ideal for a team to lose their starting goalie, but the Devils may be more equipped than any to deal with it. Tyler Kelley with Pucks and Pitchforks looks at the stats of Schneider and Kinkaid, and it shows no drop off between the two. Schneider hopefully is dealing with something small, and will be back after the mini bye week, but if it is slightly longer term, the Devils will be fine with Kinkaid in net.
New Jersey Devils: Keith Kinkaid Will Excel in Larger Role
Speaking of Keith Kinkaid, every night he’s been revealing a code after Devils wins. The inspiration came from New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorious, who did a similar thing for this baseball season. Basically, different players are represented by different emojis. Will Butcher is a knife. Nico Hishcier is the Swiss flag. Of course, Kyle Palmieri is a palm tree. Some take a little thinking, like Marcus Johansson’s cup of coffee or Taylor Hall’s hotel. Chris Ryan’s guide to the Kinkaid code is crucial to cracking it every night.

Todd Correll with HockeyBuzz previews tonight’s game against the San Jose Sharks. He believes the flood gates will open for Hischier now that he got his first goal of the season. He also believes John Hynes should keep Nico and Taylor Hall away fromMarc-Édouard Vlasic. One thing we need to pay attention to is who is paired with Andy Greene. Steve Santini seems to do much better with the Devils’ captain, but Hynes keeps pairing him with Damon Severson to start the game. Should be a very interesting matchup coming off a back-to-back.
