On today’s New Jersey Devils Daily, previewing tonight’s matchup against the St. Louis Blues, where the Devils land on this week’s power rankings and who’s the team’s most important player.

Tonight, the New Jersey Devils play the St. Louis Blues at The Rock. Chris Fieldhouse with All About The Jersey previews tonight’s matchup. The Devils have been terrible against the Blues in recent years, losing seven straight. However, this is a different team. Fieldhouse thinks the defense may get a little extra work, especially Andy Greene. With as much offensive firepower as the Blues have, the shut down defenders will get extra work. You could even see Ben Lovejoy in the lineup again.

John Schweibacher with CBS New York details the western Canada road trip. The Devils came out with three points in three road games. Overall, it could have been much worse. After a good road trip by the Devils main three rookies, the team now leads the NHL in rookie points. Jesper Bratt and Will Butcher both have 12 points, while Nico Hischier is just behind them with 10.

Steve Santini may be the Devils most important player this season. It sounds crazy on a team with Taylor Hall, Cory Schneider and Nico Hischier, but the way the defense has been playing Santini needs to be the shut down guy. There have been way too many mistakes in the Devils own end. Especially against Calgary, which Santini was out with an upper-body injury, the team left Keith Kinkaid out to dry. Too many opposing players are open down low. Santini has been doing a better job staying back.

The Devils remain in the top five in Sports Illustrated’s power rankings, despite losing two in a row. Hall has been great, reminding everyone why he’s a former first-overall pick. His ability to carry this team offensively shows the promise that may have been missing at times last year. If this team’s offense can continue to carry on, they will stay competitive throughout the season.
