Tier 2
Mike Green Fallback Option

Projected Contract 2 years 4.76 AAV

I’m not a huge fan of Mike Green. Given that the Devils have three solid RD slotted in, I don’t think he should be one of the first players they contact.  However, Green could probably play LD and can play top pair minutes.  It’s not ideal, but as a stopgap it’s acceptable.  There are better and cheaper options, though.  Also, similar to Carlson, Green doesn’t actually add that much defensive value.

John Moore Hard Pass

Projected Contract 4 years 4.61 AAV

Thanks for the OT winners John, now go get paid by someone else.  Moore just isn’t nearly good enough to get paid what he’s projected.  Seriously. Damon Severson caught a lot of crap this year, but he was also being dragged down by Moore all year.  There are some good options out there and Moore isn’t even close to being one of them.

One of the biggest arguments I hear in Moore’s favor is how much he contributes in OT, but the goal is to build a team that is successful at 5v5 not at 3v3.  I appreciate Moore’s contributions but it’s time for him to go get paid and hopefully it’s not the Devils shelling out the cash.
