The New Jersey Devils could still use one major move to really round out their roster for now and the future. The offseason may have slowed down immensely, but there are a ton of players that still might be available.

We’ve past July 15th, which means the NHL offseason is sitting at a standstill. It’s been over a week since we saw a major move. Somehow, Jake Gardiner is still out there, but besides him the cupboard on the free agency board is pretty bare. There’s only one way for the New Jersey Devils to improve their team at this point; through trade.

There is a ton of talent that’s likely still available right now. There might be some moves this week or next since many NHL front office executives take their vacations in August. That’s when things usually come to almost a complete stop. The Devils could make a trade in September, as that’s happened quite often, but it would be easier to get a full idea of the lineup during the summer.

There are plenty of options still out there to make the Devils better. It’s starting to become unlikely they’ll get a huge fish like William Nylander or Patrick Laine, but there are other, very good top-six forward options still out there.

The Devils would have to give up some assets to make it happen, since most teams are waiting this long to get a better return. Obviously, the Devils best young assets (Jesper Boqvist and Ty Smith mainly) would be off limits in these deals. But the Devils will likely move other players to make these deals happen. These five could fit perfectly in what the Devils want to do.
