The New Jersey Devils are looking like they could be a very improved team, but they would be even better if these five players surprise.

The New Jersey Devils have had a really good offseason. They made the number-one overall pick in June’s NHL Draft and selected potential superstar center Jack Hughes. The very next day, they acquired P.K. Subban from the Nashville Predators and completely bolstered their roster within a 24-hour span.

It wouldn’t end there because they added Wayne Simmonds to the mix via free agency and added KHL superstar Nikita Gusev via trade with the Vegas Golden Knights. It has been a summer of great additions and with great additions comes some expectations. We know that the stars are going to shine. We pretty much know what to expect from Taylor Hall, Nico Hischier, Kyle Palmieri and even Jack Hughes who hasn’t played an NHL game yet.

It really wouldn’t surprise anyone if Hughes had a monster season and competed for the Calder Trophy. There are some players however, that could surprise some people. The guys who are depth pieces that could do some damage and help the Devils win lots of games.

The bottom six and defense core is full of guys who could go above and beyond in 2019-20 and use the talent around them to their advantage. These are the types of guys who can help a team win games and their advanced play could make or break a playoff appearance and how deep the team goes in the playoffs if they get there. These are the five Devils that could go on to be the biggest surprise en route to a great season.
